Experience

-"Partners For Success" Tutor - Substitute Teacher, Rock Island School District - Trillium Family Services Children's Farm Home, Child & Adolescent Treatment Specialist -Misericordia, Direct Service Professional 1 yr Tutoring students matches my personality (creative, thoughtful, patient, caring), interests (learning, knowledge, helping others) and skills (problem-solving, listening, friendliness). Learning is something that I enjoy personally but getting to help others learn is VERY exciting. I remember when I discovered how much I enjoyed tutoring. I would leave the school where I tutored skipping into the parking lot. It was a good experience to assist students in a supportive role to learn the course content. For me, college was a time when I LEARNED HOW TO LEARN. Helping others learn how to learn is what I keep in mind when tutoring. Sometimes, students need just a little extra time with subject matter and some personal coaching to move forward academically. When I help others learn I introduce them to different methods of learning information that they can carry with them into the future. Every student has different goals and I take that into account. Encouraging, challenging and affirming students on the way to reaching their goals is something that I consider essential to the tutoring process. Taking a holistic approach to academics is really important. Performance inside of the classroom is just as important as what a student does outside of the classroom. Social activities, work, volunteer activities, internships and classroom relationships are great ways to build up job-related skills, network, and gain job references (They are also ways to discover what we would NEVER want to do for work). However, doing the absolute best while in school is important and sometimes it takes just a little help (something for which we never stop needing to ask - even at work). I will be taking a Fundamentals of Music Theory Course at Harper Community College this summer (2015) after which I plan to take voice and Music Theory 1. I spent 3 years playing the flute in junior high and then switched to the Alto Saxophone in 8th grade. I played the Alto Sax for about 4 years. In addition I had one year of piano in grammar school and have since picked up the djembe drum and taken some percussion lessons. I also picked up the guitar. I can teach students to play these instruments at a basic level. If you are interested in getting tutored or finding a tutor for a child I will assess what aspects of the subject area are already mastered and which areas need work and move forward from there. Thank you for reviewing this profile and I hope to hear from you.
